Daily Diary – History of Juchheim

In 1915, young German baker Karl Juchheim came to Japan from China as a prisoner of war and four years later was the first man to bake and sell traditional German baumkuchen in the country. A confection now enjoyed by modern Japanese people and often as part of wedding celebrations, few realize baumkuchen's beginnings lie in this tale of love, war and resolve in the face of catastrophe.
