Makiko & Leon

Diagnosed at a young age as having autism spectrum disorder, Leon suffered difficulty communicating with others, even his parents, but was able to form a deep connection with his mother Makiko after being introduced to her joyful world of cooking.

After moving to London and starting a family, Makiko was inspired to pass on her love of Japanese food and culture to her children and beyond. She opened her own restaurant Suzu House where she also started a cooking school, teaching English neighbours how to cook sushi, gyoza and mochi as well as other dishes. Her passion for sharing the food she grew up eating has taken her to Buckingham Palace and other prestigious venues and events, and this passion has now been embraced by her son.
